Build Better Careers
Build Better Careers
Indianapolis, Indiana, United States
Description

The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) is a national, nonprofit membership organization working to improve education-to-career pathways for adult learners. We help organizations succeed by providing expertise, resources, and innovative solutions that effectively support adult learners as they navigate on- and off-ramps between education and employment.

This six-year project will be offered across five cities to provide adult learners with access to affordable postsecondary classes, connect more job seekers to higher-wage jobs and long-term career opportunities, and encourage financial services organizations to hire more adult learners and set them up for success. CAEL has selected the Charlotte, NC, Memphis, TN, and South Florida regions as three of five locations to implement this initiative.

Build Better Careers is funded by the Truist Foundation. "Where It Starts" is a Truist Foundation multi-year initiative designed to create real, meaningful change for entrepreneurs and career-seekers in underserved communities. Truist Foundation partners with local and national nonprofits to build new, innovative programs that break down barriers and open doors for growth and success.

Finding the Helpers: Developing Their Key Career Skills - Course-based Internship Experience

CHES 3450/ COSC 3450/ SOCY 4480

Oct 20, 2025 - Dec 12, 2025

Finding the Helpers: Developing Their Key Career Skills is a course-based internship experience that provides undergraduate social science students opportunities to develop and refine career skills working on real-world projects. Course projects may vary due to the wide variety of people who “help”: Legal, medical, educational, governmental, community organizations, non-profits, and others, but learners have the opportunity to engage in consulting projects with industry partners, allowing them to apply their classroom knowledge in a practical setting. Learners will explore a wide range of "helping" careers as a foundation for the types of organizations that help and for an overview of skills necessary for helping-type projects. Student research and analysis of industry partner challenges prepare them to provide innovative, interdisciplinary solutions for issues addressed by “Helpers.” Learners work in small virtual teams to tackle real-world challenges of industry partners while honing their (1) communication skills, (2) critical and innovative thinking skills, (3) teamwork skills, (4) professionalism, and (5) leadership skills. By collaborating with company project managers, learners will gain insights into industry practices and deliver tangible results within a defined timeframe.
